NAIROBI, KENYA — Nairobi has earned a prestigious spot as the fifth-best city in Africa, according to the Travellers’ Choice Awards by Tripadvisor. This recognition highlights the Kenyan capital’s appeal to travelers seeking unique experiences and vibrant urban culture.
Morocco’s Marrakech claimed the top position on the list, followed by the scenic island of Mauritius in second place. Zanzibar, a favorite among tourists in Tanzania, secured third place, while Cape Town Central in South Africa ranked fourth.
Reacting to the news, Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano expressed her delight on social media, celebrating Nairobi’s recognition and its growing stature as a global travel destination.
“May we continue maintaining peace, patriotism, prosperity, and kindness among us. Kenya is our home and a dream destination for the world,” she said.
Beyond its bustling urban landscape, Nairobi offers a rare blend of nature and wildlife. The city boasts Nairobi National Park, a sprawling game reserve renowned for protecting endangered black rhinos.
Visitors can also spot giraffes, zebras, and lions roaming freely against the backdrop of a vibrant metropolis. Adjacent to the park is the famous David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which operates an elephant orphanage cherished by locals and tourists alike.
Tripadvisor’s annual Travellers’ Choice Awards highlight the world’s most beloved destinations, hotels, restaurants, and activities. The awards are based on millions of reviews and ratings collected from travelers over the past year.
To qualify, destinations and establishments must be listed on Tripadvisor for at least a year, garner a minimum number of reviews, and maintain a strong bubble rating.
Specific sub-categories may have additional criteria, such as the types of guest experiences or amenities offered.
Winners of the prestigious Best of the Best awards represent the genuine opinions and experiences of travelers worldwide, celebrating discoveries made in the preceding year.
For 2025, Marrakech—nicknamed the “Red City”—earned the top spot for its enchanting markets, gardens, palaces, and mosques. Nairobi secured its place as Africa’s fifth-best city, a testament to its unique charm and natural treasures.
“Exploring the intimate courtyards and snaking alleyways of the historic Medina can easily eat up a day. Find inner peace at the serene Jardin Majorelle or take in the beauty of one of the city’s historic mosques,” Tripadvisor said.
