KAMPALA, UGANDA — The Ministry of Education and Sports has announced the results of the 2024 examinations, revealing an overall increase in the pass rate compared to the previous year.
A breakdown of the results shows that 84,301 candidates achieved the highest grade (First Grade), while 397,589 earned a Second Division pass.
Additionally, 165,284 students attained a Third Grade pass, and 75,556 received a Fourth Grade pass. Unfortunately, 64,251 candidates did not achieve a passing grade.
Analysis of the results indicates improved performance in several key subjects, including Social Studies and Religious Studies, Integrated Science, and Mathematics.
A greater percentage of candidates in 2024 achieved passing grades at the Second Division level and above, demonstrating a general improvement in student outcomes.
Overall, the 2024 cohort outperformed the 2023 cohort, with a pass rate of 91.8% compared to 88.0% the previous year. This represents a notable positive shift in student achievement.
‘’There is a drop in the number of candidates obtaining Division 1. Division U (Ungraded) is awarded to candidates who have failed to reach the minimum level of performance that can be awarded the minimum Division 4. They are not eligible for admission to the Senior One class,’’ said UNEB executive director Mr. Dan Odong while presenting the results to Minister for Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni at Nakasero State House.
Student performance showed improvement in several subjects, notably Social Studies, Religious Studies, Integrated Science, and Mathematics.
However, a decline in overall performance was observed in English compared to the 2023 examinations.
A total of 797,444 candidates from 14,883 examination centers (schools) registered for the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) in 2024, an increase from the 749,347 registered in 2023. Of these candidates, 524,025 (65.7%) from 11,451 centers were beneficiaries of the Universal Primary Education (UPE) program, while 273,419 (34.3%) from 3,432 centers were non-UPE candidates.
