KAJIADO, KENYA — A manhunt is underway for a suspect who allegedly murdered his girlfriend and then contacted the Isinya Police Station in Kajiado County to report the crime.
The 27-year-old suspect informed police on February 3rd that he had killed his girlfriend, Risper Ngendo Munene (24), at a residence where he worked as a caretaker in Olooltepes, Isinya Sub-County. Following the chilling confession, the suspect abruptly hung up the phone and has since been unreachable, his mobile phone switched off.
Police officers dispatched to the scene discovered Ngendo’s lifeless body inside a locked house. The body, covered with a blanket, displayed signs of trauma, including black marks on the limbs and neck, and appeared swollen. Investigations revealed Ngendo had traveled to the area to visit the suspect.
The deceased’s body was transported to the Nairobi City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination. The motive behind the murder remains under investigation.
In a separate incident, a murder suspect being held at Chogoria Police Station in Tharaka Nithi County was found dead in his cell. James Muthaura, 30, who was also facing charges of child kidnapping, was discovered deceased on Thursday morning.
According to police, other detainees alerted officers to Muthaura’s condition. Upon inspection, it was determined that Muthaura had died by suicide, having hanged himself using his underwear on the cell’s ventilation grill.
Senior police officials are investigating the incident and have invited the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to participate in the probe. Muthaura’s body was moved to Chuka Referral Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
In another incident, two male suspects escaped from custody at Laisamis police station. Abraham Kimeto and Peter Gitau, who were detained on charges of breaking and entering and handling stolen property, made their escape on Thursday morning while awaiting their appearance before a mobile court.
A police officer on duty at the time of the escape has been arrested as part of the investigation, with authorities suspecting possible facilitation. A search operation is currently underway to apprehend the escaped suspects.
These incidents follow a recent trend of escapes from police custody, raising concerns about security protocols. In a separate incident last month, eight inmates escaped from Wundanyi prison in Taita Taveta County after breaching the roof of their cell.
Four of the escapees have since been recaptured and transferred to Manyani Prison, while the search for the remaining fugitives continues.
