NAIROBI, KENYA — The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is conducting an investigation into a cyberattack that compromised its official X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts. The incident resulted in the dissemination of false information attributed to the DCI.
In a statement released on Sunday evening, the DCI confirmed that it had regained control of its social media platforms after a brief period of disruption.
The agency emphasized that the fraudulent messages circulating during the attack, particularly those related to cryptocurrency and blockchain, were not authentic and should be disregarded.
“SECURITY ALERT! For a short period this evening (Sunday), we experienced a cyber-attack on the DCI digital platforms (X and Facebook) but have since regained full control. A thorough investigation into the criminal activity has been initiated to bring the perpetrators to justice,” the statement read.
The DCI has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for this cybercrime.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the increasing vulnerability of digital platforms to cyberattacks and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to protect online information and maintain public trust.
