TRIPOLI, LIBYA — Libya’s Minister for Cabinet Affairs, Adel Juma, was injured in an assassination attempt in the capital, Tripoli, on Wednesday. The Government of National Unity (GNU), the UN-recognized government based in Tripoli, condemned the attack, stating that Juma is in stable condition after gunmen fired upon his vehicle.
The GNU has launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators and has vowed to not tolerate threats to the nation’s security and stability.
Juma, a close advisor to Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, has served as Minister for Cabinet Affairs since March 2021.
This attack underscores the ongoing security challenges facing Libya, which has been plagued by instability and conflict since the 2011 uprising that ousted long-time dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
The country remains deeply divided, with the GNU in the west contending with a rival authority in the east backed by military strongman Khalifa Haftar.
This incident follows a series of attacks targeting government officials, including an attack on the home and office of Dbeibah’s nephew in April 2023 and an assassination attempt on the then-Interior Minister, Fathi Bashagha, in 2021.
