NAIROBI, KENYA — The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a directive requiring all sand transporters to obtain permits under new environmental regulations.
In a notice dated February 18, 2025, NEMA instructed those involved in sand harvesting to apply for licenses through its official portal.
Director-General Mamo Boru Mamo emphasized the importance of these regulations, citing the Environmental Management and Coordination (Sand Harvesting) Regulations of 2024, which aim to promote environmental conservation.
This new directive aims to ensure the sustainable and environmentally responsible extraction and transportation of sand in Kenya.
“The main objective of the regulations is to ensure the sustainable utilization of sand as a resource while protecting the environment,” the statement read in part.
For further inquiries or to obtain more information, NEMA encourages stakeholders to contact them via their official email address or visit the nearest county director of environment’s office.
