NAIROBI, KENYA — A formal request for dialogue has been issued by the Kenyan High Commissioner to Uganda, Joash A. Maangi, seeking a meeting with General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).
This move comes in response to a recent article published by the Standard newspaper in Kenya, which has ignited diplomatic tensions between the two East African nations.
In a letter addressed to Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kenyan High Commission in Kampala expressed its concern regarding the Standard’s February 28, 2025, front-page story, headlined “Four-star brat.”
The article’s critique of Gen. Kainerugaba’s behavior, labeling him “erratic” and linking his growing military influence to contentious diplomatic episodes, has prompted Kenya to seek clarification.
The High Commission’s letter emphasized that the publication appeared to “discredit the office and person” of the UPDF Chief, contradicting the longstanding positive relationship between Kenya and Uganda. It underscored the importance of open communication to prevent misinterpretations arising from media reports.
This diplomatic initiative coincides with planned demonstrations by Uganda’s Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a group supporting Muhoozi’s political aspirations, at the Kenyan High Commission in Kampala. The PLU has accused Kenyan media of disrespecting their leader and threatened retaliatory action.
While the Ugandan government has not yet officially responded to the meeting request, analysts suggest that Kenya’s action reflects its commitment to averting a diplomatic crisis stemming from the media controversy.
Whether Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba will agree to the meeting remains uncertain, given his history with critics and his outspoken stances on regional matters.
It is also important to note that Kenya’s press freedom is robust, making direct governmental intervention in editorial decisions unlikely.
However, with political sensitivities running high, this meeting could be pivotal in preserving stability between the two neighboring nations.
